I like hanging out on the fourth floor of Taipei 101. It has a large open space, English book store and coffee shop. It’s nice to sit down, have a cup of coffee and read a new book while the wife goes window shopping. Everybody’s happy.

“I have made many friends with people from all over. My two best friends are from New York and England, and I’m from New Zealand. Where else could I make such friends?

“Presently, I have a student who is a doctor. We are role playing for her medical test in the USA. She has a great sense of humor making her class productive and enjoyable.”

Simon Ellwood: Simon comes to Taiwan from England. He has been teaching at David’s for one year.

“One of my favorite things about living here is the convenience of the place. You can get anything, anytime. It’s great! Also, Taiwan is incredibly safe.”

The secretaries at David’s are fantastic. So helpful and friendly, they are always smiling. They made me feel welcome from day one.”

The thing that sticks out in my memory is the kindness and friendliness of the Taiwanese people. I encounter it every day.”

I’m sure!

I recently got my certification from TESL Express, and am planning to go on to a graduate degree in this exciting field.  What began as an interest in creating a new travel opportunity and an avocational source of additional income turned into a fascinating field of its own.  I had nothing but great experiences with the management, staff and faculty at this facility.

I had two instructors, as well as a "host" instructor for my Practicum, and my classes were always well-planned, interesting and productive.  The faculty at this school have a wide range of teaching backgrounds, and really gave me a solid foundation in starting out in this field.  The teaching practicum was an invaluable way to see what the teaching actually looks like, and to more fully comprehend the instructor's role.  I know I will have my own concerns when I begin teaching with my own students, but I'm confident I have the capability to solve those problems as they come up.

Indeed, I know my faculty at TESL Express will be willing and able to offer their suggestions and insights, should I ever need to contact them for advice.  You will be happy with your training at this school, I'm sure!

New York Yankees, Chien-Ming Wang

At 8, barely off the boat from Shanghai, I found my way to the American Dream, courtesy of my love for Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play major league baseball.

Now there's Chien-Ming Wang. He's a member of my tribe. He too wrestles with English. But he has more in common with Jackie than with me. The Yankees ace won 19 games last year, and as runner-up for the Cy Young Award, he is a rising star. In his island home, he is already a supernova. Whenever he pitches, whether it's a live telecast or a rerun, Taiwan ditches its political woes and personal cares to huddle in the most unlikely places—from bars to beauty parlors to boardrooms—to cheer Chien-Ming. No matter that the fan shouting alongside is mandarin or mendicant, from the mainland or local born, a great-great-grandma with bound feet or a bare-bottomed tot, the voices are one.

Once Jackie's excellence and elegance broke the color barrier. Nowadays the Ichiros, Dice-Ks and Chien-Mings of baseball are chipping away at the culture barrier. At a time when clashes of civilizations warm up in the on-deck circle, this 8-year-old heart dreams of a world as hopeful and intimate as bygone Ebbets Field. –by Betty Bao Lord

Wang has only lost once in his last seven starts and is looking more like the guy who won 19 games last season. Despite Saturday's less than stellar performance, Wang remains a solid option in all Fantasy formats. His next scheduled start is for Thursday against the Orioles or Friday against the A's — depending on how the team treats its off day Monday.
